I am looking for skilled bookbinders to collaborate on a project, and hope you may be able to help. I work for Oak Tree Fine Press, a not-for-profit publishers on the outskirts of Oxford. Originally set up with the assistance of double Booker Prize winner and Nobel Laureate J.M.Coetzee, we specialise in signed, beautifully designed editions of works by leading modern authors, with all profits going to support children made vulnerable by HIV and AIDS. Further details can be found on our website at www.oaktreefinepress.com

We are currently looking for highly talented bookbinders who would be interested in a major new venture. In collaboration with Philip Pullman we are looking to produce an illustrated, limited edition, letter press book containing an extract from The Northern Lights, the book which formed the basis of the recent Hollywood film The Golden Compass. The book will comprise the bear fight which takes up most of the chapter 'A Outrance' in Philip Pullman's Northern Lights. We have already got three fantastic woodcut artists involved on the book (Andy English, Chris Daunt and Harry Brockway) and I attach our current working draft for the book.

This is a very exciting project, with the potential to raise very significant funds for children in desperate need. For this reason, in addition to our standard print run, we would like to produce a very small number of books featuring unique bindings by accomplished book designers and binders. These would be very heavily marketed to the UK and US media, as well as to specialist magazines, and we are planning a major launch event together with Philip Pullman. We believe this project has tremendous creative scope, and is a great opportunity for an artist to raise their profile. Most importantly, however, it is for an incredibly important cause.

Oak Tree Fine Press is a very small organisation. We are run mainly by volunteers and work extremely hard to keep our expenses to a minimum. We are constantly aware that our expenditure directly impacts the funds we are able to send to assist painfully vulnerable children in very urgent need, and for this reason, at this stage we do not feel that we could cover binder's fees beyond the most basic production costs.

We would like to hear as soon as possible from enthusiastic designers who might be interested in this project. The books will be ready for binding in late June this year, and we are looking to launch in September. This means that July and August can be allocated for binding. The specially bound books will be printed letter press on Ruscombe handmade paper. We would be happy to be guided by our binders on their designs and are very excited about what ideas you may come up with.

Many thanks for your time. I very much hope that this is a project that inspires you. Please do visit our website or contact me if you have any queries.

Muchas gracias.

Dear Rodrigo, thanks for your interest. Here are a few further details in response to your query. If you let me know your email address I would be delighted to send you a copy of the current planned layout for the book.
Best wishes, Nancy
_ Each binder will be provided with one copy of the book. Unfortunately, we will not be in a position to provide spare copies.
_ Each book has 48 pages, printed four pages to view, in eight page sections, on 160gm hand made paper. The page size is 250mmx350mm (portrait).
_ The book will be available at the end of June 2009 and bindings need to be completed by end August 2009.
_ Oak Tree Fine Press is only able to cover the cost of very basic materials and even that budget is very limited.
_ All profits from the sales of the books will go to organisations offering care and support to children made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS.

Estimado Rodrigo, quiero dir tambien, un abrazo desde Oxford y que no tengas ninguna novedad "Porcina"
